Freedman's Favorites: Law
The Buffalo Creek Disaster, by Gerald M. Stern (2008). How the
survivors of one
of
the worst disasters in coal-mining history brought suit against the coal
company and won. In
1972, an impoundment dam owned by Pittston Coal Co. burst, sending a 25-foot
wave of water, sludge, and debris crashing into West Virginia’s Buffalo
Creek hollow, leaving over 100 dead, 1,000 injured, and 4,000 homeless. The
author is the plaintiffs' lawyer who won the case thanks to dogged
investigation and trial skills. Click on the book image for details.

Wall Street. The author broke the story in the Wall Street
Journal. For the full review of this book and another

(Lake Michigan) through Lakes Huron & Erie, and out the Erie Canal to New
York City and up the Atlanta coast to Maine. He weaves in history, ecology,
and his previous adventures on Lake Superior.
